Global Value Chain Embeddedness and Green Growth of China's Manufacturing Industry


Abstract:Using panel data from 17 manufacturing industries from 2000 to 2014, this paper empirically analyzes the impact of GVC embedding and embedding status on green growth in manufacturing (I. e., green total factor productivity GTFP) and its mechanism. It is found that the embedded degree, embedded status and GTFP of manufacturing GVC show different characteristics at different technical levels and different time periods. Improving the embedding degree and embedding status of GVC is conducive to the improvement of GTFP in manufacturing industry, in which the role of GVC embedding status is relatively stronger, but there are significant differences in its mechanism. Improving the degree of GVC embedding is mainly to improve the manufacturing GTFP by improving technical efficiency and promoting technological progress, while improving the status of GVC embedding is mainly to enhance the manufacturing GTFP by promoting technological progress and narrowing the technological gap.

The results show that GVC embedding participation, embedding position and GTFP of manufacturing industry show different characteristics in different technology levels and different time periods. Increases in both GVC embedding participation and embedding position are conducive to the improvement of manufacturing GTFP, where GVC embedding position has played a stronger role, but their mechanisms are significantly different. Increase in GVC embedding participation can improve manufacturing GTFP mainly through the improvement of both technological efficiency and technical progress, while increase in GVC embedding position can improve manufacturing GTFP mainly through the improvement of technical progress and the decrease of technology gap.
