The Paradigm Evolution of Scientific Research in China

Abstract:In 1977, science of science was formally proposed in China as a discipline that examines scientific research activities and summarizes the laws of its movement and changes, and for nearly half a century, the study of Chinese science of science under the Bernard paradigm has experienced an evolutionary path from qualitative speculation to mathematical statistics and then to the map of scientific knowledge. In the 1980 s, science began to enter the stage of scientometrics through mathematical and statistical methods, and eventually merged with the scientific research of the international community. At the beginning of the 21st century, with the concept of knowledge metrology put forward, the visualization path of scientific knowledge map brought science into the third stage. This evolution of science of science in China is also manifested in the refined development from the initial science of science to the later scientometrics.

Abstract:In 1977, "Science of Science"(SciSci) was formally proposed in China as a social science to investigate scientific research activities and to summarize the laws of scientific development. In the nearly half-century that followed, the study of SciSci in China under the Bernardine paradigm has undergone an evolutionary path from qualitative thinking to mathematical statistics and then to mapping knowledge domain. In 1980 s, SciSci research in China was beginning to enter the scientometric phase through mathematical and statistical methods, thus it later became integrated into the international community. At the beginning of the 21 st century, with the introduction of the concept of knowmetrics, the visualisation method of mapping knowledge domain took SciSci into its third phase. This paradigm evolution of SciSci could also be reflected as the development from the SciSci to the refinement of scientometrics in China.
